Why this exists
Volunteering should be easy to start
I started Start Here HK because student volunteering in Hong Kong is harder to start than it should be, especially at 14 or 15. That is the age when a lot of teenagers want to start doing something, whether that is trying new experiences, finding a hobby, contributing to the community, or building up their university applications.
The problem is that opportunities are scattered across different websites and Instagram accounts, and many of them turn out to be 18+ anyway. This site puts them in one place, so you can see what is actually open to you and spend less time searching.

How it works
Start Here HK gathers animal and environmental volunteering in Hong Kong into one place. From dog walking and cat care to beach cleanups and tree planting, browse the Opportunities page, filter by your age and area, and sign up directly with the organisation.
- The Opportunities page lists everything on the site.
- Filter by your age, by animals or the environment, by area, by species, by day and time, by how much commitment it needs, and by whether experience is required.
- Most animal volunteering in Hong Kong is 18+ because of local labour rules, so setting your age matters.
- There is more available to under 18s than you might expect, and the filter will show you exactly what.
- The Calendar shows opportunities that happen on a specific date, like a Saturday adoption day or a beach cleanup.
- Click any date to see what is on.
- Opportunities without a fixed date, where you arrange your own hours with the organisation, live on the Opportunities page instead.
- Events that have already passed move below a divider so you can still see them but will not sign up for them by mistake.
- Every opportunity shows the organisation, what you would be doing, where it is, the nearest MTR, the minimum age, and whether you need any experience.
- Click an opportunity to open the full details, including how to get there and anything you need to bring or pay.
- Green marks animal volunteering, orange marks environmental volunteering.
- Every opportunity links straight to the organisation running it.
- Some have a sign up form or a booking page. Others just ask you to turn up, or to send an email first.
- The Sign up button takes you wherever that organisation wants you to go.
- Start Here HK does not handle registration, so you are always signing up with the organisation directly.
- If you are not sure what to write to an organisation, the Message helper drafts it for you.
- Fill in a few details about yourself and why you want to volunteer, and it writes a friendly message you can copy and send.
- If you are under 16 it adds a polite line asking whether they have anything suitable for your age.
- The Learn section has quizzes on dog care, cat care and the environment, so you know what you are doing before you turn up.
- The Support page lists other ways to help beyond volunteering, from sharing a post to fostering an animal.
- Everything here is gathered from Hong Kong organisations, checked before it goes up, and updated as things change.
- Organisations can add their own opportunities through the For organisations page.
