Ways to help

You don’t need loads of time to help. Below are ways to help animals and ways to help the environment, sorted from quick and easy to bigger commitments. Start small and see where it takes you.

Ways to help animals

Sorted from easiest to biggest commitment.

  1. Support / share

    None

Not everyone can volunteer right now, and that's completely fine. Sharing a post about an animal or a cleanup takes about thirty seconds, and it genuinely helps them get seen by someone who can go. It all adds up.

  2. Shelter volunteer

    A few hrs/week

If you'd love animals in your life but can't keep one at home, shelters are the answer. You can walk dogs, socialise cats, or help with feeding, and most places are happy to have regular helpers. A few hours a week makes a real difference to them.

  3. Sponsor

    Recurring

Maybe you have a little money to give but no time or space right now. Lots of organisations let you sponsor an animal's food and care each month, and you'll usually get updates on how they're doing.

  4. Transport

    Ad hoc

If your family has a car and a bit of free time here and there, you could help drive animals to vet visits, foster homes, or adoption days. Rescues are almost always short on transport, so it's a really useful thing to offer, and you can say yes whenever it suits you.

  5. Day-out / sleepover foster

    1 day to 1 weekend

Not sure you're ready for a long commitment? You can take a shelter dog out for the day, or have them stay over for a weekend. It gives an animal a happy break from kennel life, and it's a gentle way to find out what fostering really feels like.

  6. Foster

    Weeks to months

Fostering means caring for an animal at home for a few weeks or months until they find their family. You give them a safe, warm place to land in the meantime, and the rescue usually covers food and vet bills, so the costs don't fall on you.

  7. Foster-to-adopt

    Trial to permanent

If part of you is ready to adopt but you'd like to be sure first, this lets you bring an animal home as a foster with the option to keep them. There's no pressure either way, and plenty of families end up finding their forever pet exactly this way.

  8. Adopt

    Lifetime

If you're ready for a lifelong friend and everyone at home is on board, adopting gives an animal a family for good. It's the biggest step here and easily the most rewarding. When the time feels right, reach out to any shelter on our Opportunities page.

Ways to help the environment

Sorted from easiest to biggest commitment.

  1. Reduce & reuse

    Daily habit

This one is for everyone, and you can start today. Carry a reusable bottle and bag, say no to single-use plastic where you can, and be a bit more thoughtful about what you throw away. Small daily choices really do stack up over a year.

  2. Share & spread awareness

    None

If you're online anyway, you can put a little of that time to good use. Sharing local cleanups, campaigns, and environmental causes helps them reach people who care. It costs you nothing and quietly grows the crowd that turns up.

  3. Join a cleanup or planting day

    One day

Fancy a day outdoors that actually helps? Beach cleanups and tree-planting days are friendly, open to beginners, and usually come with all the gear you need. Bring a friend, get a bit muddy, and leave the place better than you found it.

  4. Regular conservation volunteer

    Ongoing

If you want something more regular, conservation groups always need steady hands. Depending on the group you might help with events, fieldwork, tree nurseries, or recycling. Turn up often enough and you'll pick up real skills and a whole community along the way.
